Dear friends,
God has blessed us with an abundance of gifts and talents. As the new year of religious education begins, we have to share God’s blessings. Uniting all of our potential creates a community God desires. We shouldn’t hesitate to volunteer, join a ministry, or help with anything that fosters a deeper sense of belonging.

Dear Friends,
The Lord has blessed us with the presence of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Under the appearance of Our Lady of Fatima, the Mother of God visits our families. She is very close to us. She embraces us with her motherly love. She knows us from the beginning. She intercedes for us in every need. She desires we follow her Son, the Savior of the world. She truly listens to each and every one of us.
As we have opened the doors of our home to accept the statue, we feel sanctified. The place where we live becomes holy. The Rosary prayer transcends beyond sheer physical reality. The statue reminds us of the spiritual realm. Indeed, our life is engulfed by something larger and greater. We are not alone.

My Friends,
This weekend Deacon Hyacinth Marie Cordell is with us. He is the homilist at the 5:30 pm Mass. Even though he is still going through seminary study and formation, his ordination is just around the corner. Deacon Hyacinth will be ordained in May 2011. I am eagerly looking forward to his First Mass here at St. Peter Damian Church. It will be a great joy for our faith community.
Last weekend Megan Zeugner shared with us about her journey to discern her vocation to the religious life. I hope all of you read her article. My heart was moved by her story how God has been calling her. On August 24th, 2010, she will be joining the Salesian Sisters in North Haledon, New Jersey. She will go through four years of formation as an aspirant, postulant, and novice. She has much appreciation for all God’s blessings she has experienced in our family Church of St. Peter Damian. On Sunday, August 22, at the 11:00 am Mass Megan will receive a special blessing. Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary we pray she will always follow Jesus Christ, who is our life and salvation.

My Friends,
Last week, we made another step. The Paper Retriever Recycling Bin was placed by the Boy Scouts trailers. You may have already seen this bright yellow and green dumpster type collection bin. It has been brought to our community so all of us would actively engage to care about our mother Earth. There is so much waste and landfill use, that if we stand by and do nothing, we show we do not respect God’s creation. As a Catholic community, we are called to advance the cause of a clean environment. Have you ever thought about how much paper is thrown in the trash every single day? There are startling statistics on paper waste generated each day by a person working in an office. What about our home? A couple of weeks ago it dawned on me that even an insignificant envelope could be saved and recycled. Have we reflected on how much paper actually lands in the trash every day in our house? Let us pause, think, and decide to bring the paper products to our recycling bin Read more... |

My Friends,
I am delighted to welcome Sister Miriam Therese Ezike from the Congregation of Daughters of Divine Love. She will be talking to us about the mission apostolate of her religious order. As you have read from the previous week, the sisters do a variety of ministries in different parts of the world, including America, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, Germany, England, Italy, Switzerland, Nigeria, Chad, Gabon, Cameroon, Mali and Kenya.
This weekend the Archdiocesan mission collection allows us to look behind our local boundaries to reach out to the universal Church. I strongly believe that all of us have a missionary zeal.

My Friends,
The summer goes fast. Last week was wonderful. I was happy to greet the parents and their children. Each of us was astounded that Hardy Hall changed into a rainforest. You could feel it right at the entrance with a colorful bridge and raindrops. Of course, the kids had lots of fun. They also discovered what Jesus was teaching. The whole atmosphere of SonQuest Rainforest Vacation Bible Camp helped them to grow in faith and charity. I hope everyone sees that the Church is a place where God helps us to develop our potential.

My Friends,
Now, we are in full swing with signing up for portrait sessions. This is also going very well. Just over the past weekend almost one hundred families have registered. I have to emphasize this is a wonderful opportunity. Each family gets a free 8 x 10, portrait and a free 60th Parish Anniversary Directory. In addition, all the stories that we were asking for will be published in this fabulous and colorful directory. If there is a family that has not signed up yet, please do so as soon as possible.

My Friends,
July begins a new fiscal year for our parish. We are doing very fine in every aspect of our parish life. We are in the black. Though the weekend collections went slightly down, the expense cuts allowed us to manage our budget. The detailed financial report will be given by the members of the Finance Council in September.
Next weekend we will have a second collection for the renovation fund. It is about upkeep of our buildings. First of all, we are looking into the chapel building. The committee took a first look into what needs to done. The estimates will be published soon.

My Friends,
It is my joy to be with you. There are so many exciting projects and activities. Yet in the midst of our daily work, we find time for prayer and the Eucharist. Since this is already summertime, what usually happens is that some take vacation from the Sunday Mass. I hope this is not the case in our vibrant faith community.

We are celebrating Father’s Day this weekend. I am grateful to our Almighty Father who has generously blessed us, the Church family of St. Peter Damian, with loving and caring fathers. I see all their hard work and dedication. I always rejoice when a father comes with his wife and children to celebrate the Sunday Eucharist. As a family, they pray together. As a family, they work together. As a family, they share the joys and sorrows together. As a family, they support each other. The marvelous grace of God is working among them. This remarkable Christian witness is contagious. I feel blessed every time I see it.

This week I had a meeting with a wonderful group of creative ladies working on our parish stories on the occasion of 60th anniversary. As collecting of the stories came to an end, we eagerly accepted the idea of including them in the parish picture directory. This is a truly exciting time. I cannot stress this enough. We are blessed beyond our imagination. Soon all of us will have an opportunity to sign up for a complimentary picture session. I am enthused about this endeavor because I believe that all our families will take a photo and have a greater sense of belonging to St. Peter Damian Catholic Church. We all should be grateful to be part of a friendly, welcoming and compassionate community that is ever growing in spiritual strength.

My Friends, It has been a powerful spiritual ex-perience to see the Shroud of Turin with my own eyes. The Shroud, a centuries old linen cloth, speaks volumes. Seemingly untouched by time, the image of a crucified man is like an icon. You can feel the blood stains, the pain of scourge, the hei-nous suffering. You can track the details of his death. The imprints depict the various wounds that had been inflicted on the Man of the Shroud. Read more... |

Dear Friends, The Feast of the Ascension is a source of great hope and conso-lation to all of us. It means that Jesus, triumphant over death, has begun a new life with God. He has gone to heaven to prepare the place for us. The Ascension of Jesus can be defined as the transfer of his risen, glorious body to heaven, that is, to the world of the divine. In the Old Testament, God is described in some texts as "descending" from heaven to accomplish something on earth; he then "ascends" or returns to the world of the divine. Jesus himself speaks of descending to this earth and ascending again to the Father once his work of redemption has been accomplished. Read more... |

Dear Friends, We celebrate Mother's Day this weekend. We appreciate the Blessed Virgin Mother, who is constantly interceding for us. With joyful hearts, we accept the presence of the mother of God under the appearance of Our Lady of Fatima. Our Church family is warmly welcoming her gentle and reassuring love. I am inspired by all the faithfilled families who are graciously inviting the Virgin Mary to their homes. It is great we spend more time in prayer. It is wonderful to know a mother's love and compassion. In this atmosphere, we will be growing spiritually seeing what is the most important in our life. We will be aligning more around God, who offers us true freedom.

This Saturday,we have the celebration of the First Holy Communion. We are blessed that children and their families are committing themselves to a lifelong journey with Jesus Christ in the Catholic Church. The Holy Communion is the real presence of Jesus. Each time we partake in the Eucharist, we are nourished by the bread of life. Jesus upholds our human dignity. Jesus invites us to a new life with Him. There is no greater value in our life than to foretaste the reality of divine life. Indeed, the Holy Communion energizes us to serve, celebrate, learn, and share. Read more... |
